She's a Legendary Demon Hunter [Rebirth] - Chapter 7
“So basically, these days, as long as demons register with the Demon Hunter Association, they can continue living amongst mortals?”
After listening to the brief introduction of today’s world from the sparrow spirit, Mi Wan’s face was filled with disbelief. It was no wonder that she was so surprised. 500 years ago, the war between the humans and the demons was in full swing, and both sides fought viciously to the death. Even she was trapped to death at Molin by a group of demons because she had grown infamous from killing too many demons. Furthermore, the magical artifact that was used to trap her back then, was immensely powerful. So powerful that her soul was unable to reincarnate though 500 years had passed since her death.
She did not expect that the demon race and the demon hunters would make peace in the last five hundred years. Deep inside, she could not help but feel a little bitter. However, her anger only lasted for a moment. It had been nearly five hundred years since she had died. Humans did not generally have life spans that can go over a hundred years. In five hundred years, she would have gone through the reincarnation process for six or seven times. The phrase “let bygones be bygones” would have been repeated for about seven or eight of these cycles. Moreover, she only killed demons because the demon race wreaked havoc in the human world. Now that the demons were able to avoid hurting innocent people, she could not be bothered with doing anything to them.
“Aren’t you a demon hunter? Shouldn’t you know these things?” The sparrow spirit asked in surprise. It had been almost a hundred years since the rules were set, to think there were still people ignorant about them…..
“Ahem… I just came out of the mountains, so I don’t quite understand the protocol.”
“…” Who would believe that?! Glancing down at the shoes on Mi Wan’s feet, the sparrow spirit silently judged.
The mountains don’t have 8000-yuan worth of running shoes!
“As the saying goes, only those of our kind can change our minds. Who could have accomplished such a feat?” Mi Wan was sincerely curious.
When she was young, while hunting for demons with her master for the first time, she could not help but ask her master why demons had to be killed and whether they could live in harmony. At the time, her master’s answer was ‘only those of our kind can change our minds,’ and that humans and demons would never be able to sincerely trust each other. Therefore, living harmoniously was only a delusion.
“This… could be attributed to the development of the era.” The sparrow spirit was a new generation sparrow spirit that had undergone nine years of compulsory education.
His explanation had a Marxist style to it. “It was said that five hundred years ago, there was a great war between demon hunters and the demons. That battle was equivalent to the human’s World War II, which had a profound impact.”
“Get to the point.” The original owner of this body was not good at history. Although Mi Wan knew that there was a war called World War II, she did not know exactly what it was, or what it was fought over.
“I heard it secondhand from the spirits of the older generation. They said that after the great battle five hundred years ago, though the demon hunters finally won the war, both sides suffered great losses. This was especially so after that battle in Molin, it would have been difficult for any of the demon hunters to restrain the elders of our race, who were more than a thousand years old.”
“Molin Battle?” The eyebrows of Mi Wan jumped. Wasn’t he talking about her?
“Yes, it was said that there was a particularly powerful demon hunter at that time that stood eighty feet tall, had dark skin, and singlehandedly fought against dozens of demon clans in Molin, and finally committed suicide.”
“…” A demon hunter that is eighty feet tall with dark skin that committed suicide? You’re the dark-skinned one! I’m pale like nobody’s business!
“Ever since she died, the demon hunters have never produced another demon hunter that was quite as powerful.” The sparrow spirit chirped excitedly, suddenly gossiping noisily. “But I’ve heard of another version of this story. According to an old tree demon, he said that five hundred years ago, the demon clans had set a trap, and even prepared the sacred Celestial Vine to trap that person to death.”
So, it turned out that the object that trapped her to death, was the demons’ sacred Celestial Vine. The demon king must have pulled out all the stops to obtain such a treasure.
“Do you know about the Celestial Vine? You demon hunters might not be familiar with it. It’s a relic amongst us demons that will only appear when the demon clans are on the brink of destruction and protects our legacy. Clearly that demon slayer in the past was so powerful that it almost rendered us extinct.” The sparrow demon narrated as if he was present at the scene of the battle.
“You sound like you really admire the other party?” The powerful demon master calmly looked at her little demonic fanboy.
“Ahem… but five hundred years have passed. No matter how powerful, she is already a historical figure. Besides, the demon hunters aren’t all that. After that legendary demon hunter was trapped to death by the Celestial Vine, no one amongst the other demon hunters were a match for the Demon King and eventually met their ends,” said the sparrow spirit.
“Then how did things end up like this?” The more Mi Wan listened, the more confused she became. The battle at that time was extremely traumatizing. How did the demon hunters and the demon race end up shaking hands and making peace?
“After that fateful battle, both races suffered immense losses, which led to a ceasefire where both humans and demons retreated to recover. Since then, for some unknown reason, the demon race’s conception rate saw a sudden decline. Similarly, the number of demon hunters among the humans also decreased. After several hundred years of evolution, demon hunters and demons gradually became endangered species.”
The sparrow spirit continued, “Both sides realized that they were fast approaching extinction and that fighting against each other would only get there faster. So, at some point, the leaders of both sides sat together, drank tea, and then set up this association.”
So that’s how it is.
